OLEV EVHS grant to be reduced from April 2020

Posted by Roseanne: Mar 17, 2020 3 min read

The government has announced a cut to the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) which will take effect this April.

As a follow on from the UK government’s budget on Wednesday, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) have published an update advising that the EVHS grant will be reduced to £350 from 1st April 2020.

OLEV has also provided direct guidance to chargepoint providers regarding customers who have already placed a homecharge order with them.

This is an industry-wide change that will affect anyone wishing to claim the grant on an electric vehicle home charger ordered from any UK provider.

What’s changing?

  • The OLEV EVHS grant will be reduced from £500 to £350.
  • The change will take effect from April 1st 2020.

What does this mean for drivers?

Whether you can claim the existing £500 grant or only the reduced £350 grant depends on when you ordered (or will order) your home charger and when it will be (or was) installed.

1. You ordered a home charger on or before 11th March 2020*

a) If your install is completed before 31st May 2020:

  • You will be able to claim the existing £500 EVHS grant.

b) If your install is completed on or after 31st May 2020:

  • You will only be able to claim the reduced £350 EVHS grant.

2. You ordered a home charger on or after 12th March 2020*

a) If your install is completed before April 1st 2020:

  • You will be able to claim the existing £500 EVHS grant.

b) If your install is completed on or after April 1st 2020:

  • You will only be able to claim the reduced £350 EVHS grant.

*You must have ordered your home charger from an OLEV approved installer, evidenced by an order form or contract.

What if I’m a Pod Point customer?

We've outlined what you will need to do below (if anything), based on when you placed your order and your install date.

1. You ordered your home charger on or before 11th March 2020

  • We will schedule your install date before 31st May 2020 and claim the existing £500 grant on your behalf.
  • Our team will get in touch with you to schedule your installation as normal (if they haven’t already).

2. You ordered your homecharger on or after 12th March 2020

a) If you have an installation date already confirmed in March:

  • We will carry out your installation as planned and claim the existing £500 grant on your behalf - you won’t need to pay anything extra.

b) If you don’t have an installation date already confirmed in March:

  • You will need to pay £150 to continue with your order to cover the cost of the grant reduction.
  • If you no longer wish to continue, we’ll understand and will issue a full refund.
  • We’ll contact you by email in the coming days with more details about how to make the payment or alternatively, request a refund.

Do you have any install slots left in March?

All of our March install slots are now booked, so if you haven’t got an install date confirmed in March already, you unfortunately won’t be able to get one.
