Pod Point signs Memorandum of Understanding with Gotion, InoBat, and Brill Power

Pod Point, who operates the largest network of EV charging points in the UK, announces a strategic agreement that marks a significant step in the company's expansion into the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) markets.

In order to enable customers to optimise EV charge scheduling at home, and to maximise their energy flexibility, Pod Point is exploring with partners, opportunities to bring home storage batteries to customers.

Pod Point has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese battery maker Gotion High-Tech, European EV battery startup InoBat, and Brill Power the battery technology company originating from Oxford University.

The firms will join forces to share expertise in power battery technology, EV battery R&D, and battery optimisation to develop a competitive quality home battery solution for customers.

In a world increasingly reliant on electricity and where flexibility services (the management of flexible energy resources to optimise electricity generation and consumption across the grid) are key, Pod Point sees EV charging as a strategic and natural entry point for advancing BESS solutions, given EV charging typically constitutes the most substantial and flexible electricity load within today's homes.

A home battery solution can be used to power homes or charge EVs, while enhancing the overall energy experience for consumers who can optimise their energy usage and charge during periods of low cost and when electricity on the grid is cleanest.

Commenting on the MOU, Andy Palmer, CEO, Pod Point said: "The MOU represents a step forward in the evolution of our business and the services we provide to domestic customers. It supports our commitment to providing comprehensive home charging solutions and will help advance the take up of home energy solutions. Home batteries will provide our customers with a cost-efficient energy solution while contributing to a more sustainable energy future."

Steven Cai, SVP & CTO of Gotion High-tech added: “Europe is one of the key markets for Gotion to implement its globalisation strategy. We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with Pod Point as the largest electric vehicle charging provider in the UK. We look forward to lending our technology expertise in the battery field and collaborating with the group to develop competitive and quality home battery solutions for residential customers, while also helping to advance carbon neutral efforts in Europe.”

The agreement represents the first step in a planned roadmap of activity, maximising leading-edge technology partnerships and collaborations with established industry players. The goal is to develop and deliver innovative solutions for residential customers which will aim to help users significantly reduce energy costs and minimise carbon emissions.
