NEV stands for New Energy Vehicle, this a local term used in China when referring to vehicles partially or fully powered by electricity.
These are vehicles such as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). In 2009 the Chinese government began implementation of the NEV programme to support the introduction and development of NEVs.
BYD is the largest manufacturer of plug-in vehicles (NEVs) in China, through the first half of the year they held a 65% share of the plug-in market in China. Plug-in vehicles are not BYD’s sole focus they are working on buses, light electric monorail systems and utility vehicles.
So what does new energy vehicles have to do with Leonardo DiCaprio?
Leonardo DiCaprio was recently named the brand ambassador in China for BYD’s NEVs. DiCaprio is known for his environmental activism, serving as a UN Messenger of Peace and having recently taken the leading role in the climate-change documentary “Before the Flood’”.
“All over the world, people are realising that cars that run on fossil fuels are inefficient and a major threat to the planet. I am very pleased to be joining an effort to increase the number of clean vehicles on the road in China and beyond,” Leonardo DiCaprio.
DiCaprio will be working closely with BYD in 2017 to announce and new developments regarding the line of new energy vehicles.
