The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 de is something of an oddity in the plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) SUV space, but in a good way. For starters, it’s only available as diesel-electric, not the more common petrol-electric combination we’re used to with PHEVs. This means you can expect reasonable fuel economy (for an SUV) when the electric battery runs out. Then there’s its chunky battery. At 31kWh, it’s bigger than the original Nissan Leaf, giving it an electric-only driving range of almost 60 miles. That’s bonkers for a PHEV!
